How to Fix Kasa Cam Night Vision Problems
Turn On Night Vision on Your Kasa Cam
If your Kasa Camera night vision isn’t working, you might not have enabled the feature yet.
Kasa doesn’t activate night vision by default on its cameras. If you want to access this feature, you must go to the camera’s settings and turn on night vision.
Here’s how to enable night vision on your Kasa Camera:
- Open your Kasa app and click on your camera.
- This will direct you to the camera’s page.
- Next, click on the Settings icon.
- Select Night Vision.
- You’ll see three options: Automatic, Off, and Always On.
- Click on Automatic, so the night vision turns on only at night.
Now, go back to the camera’s page and wait until night. Then, check if you can see images on the camera’s screen. If not, try the next tip.
Connect Your Camera to a New Power Outlet
Another reason why your Kasa Cam night vision may fail to work is a faulty power outlet.
It doesn’t matter if other features on your camera are working properly. Night vision requires more power to function than most features on the Kasa Cam. So, even the slightest drop in power will affect its performance.
Check the power outlet where your Kasa Cam is plugged. Does it look or feel loose? Even if it doesn’t seem loose, you should still connect the camera to another outlet to see if the night vision will work. The issue might be with an internal cable in the power outlet.
Now, check if your Kasa Camera’s night vision has resumed working. If the night vision is still inactive, try the next tip.
Power Cycle Your Kasa Camera
Sometimes, the Kasa Camera encounters functional issues, especially after working for over a year. These issues often cause certain features, like night vision, to stop working.
The easiest way to solve this problem is to power cycle the Kasa Camera. Power-cycling your camera deletes its short-term memory, thus clearing out the bugs that appeared while the device was in operation.
To power-cycle your Kasa Camera, unplug it from your power outlet and wait for 30 seconds. Then, plug the camera back into the outlet.
If your camera doesn’t show images at night after this, check out the next tip.
Switch Your Internet Connection from Wi-Fi to Cellular Data
Some Kasa Camera users have claimed that they were able to fix their camera’s night vision by switching from a Wi-Fi connection to a cellular data connection. We are not sure why this works, but it might be that the night vision on the Kasa cam works better on cellular data than Wi-Fi.
You can try this solution and see if it will reactivate night vision on your camera.
If your camera’s night vision doesn’t work after applying this tip, move on to the next step.
Update Your Camera Firmware
If your Kasa Cam firmware is outdated, it could cause the night vision to stop working.
Your camera firmware is responsible for boosting the performance of your website. But as you collect more information in the camera, the firmware becomes overwhelmed. As a result, the camera starts lagging. Some of the device’s features, such as the night vision, may also get disabled automatically.
You can fix this issue by updating your camera firmware. Here’s how to do that:
- Open your Kasa Smart app.
- Click on the navigation button (3 lines) at the top left corner of the screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Then, select Firmware Update.
- You’ll see a list of your Kasa devices.
- Scroll to your Kasa Cam on the list.
- If you see an Update button beside the app, the camera firmware is outdated.
- Tap the Update button to update your camera firmware.
After updating the firmware, wait until night to check your camera’s screen. If the screen is still entirely black, try the next tip.
Move Your Camera Away from Glass Objects
If your Kasa Cam is surrounded by glass items, the camera’s night vision won’t work. This is because mirrors and other glass objects repel infrared lights, the source of night vision in the camera. Without infrared lights, your camera won’t be able to detect people or objects in the dark.
If you don’t want your camera’s infrared light to keep getting cut, you need to move the device away from all reflective surfaces.
Once your Kasa Cam is far away from glass, the device should show images clearly in the dark.
But what if the night vision still doesn’t work? Luckily, we still have other tips you can try to fix the problem.
Delete and Re-install Your Kasa App
Sometimes, your camera may show a black screen at night, even when there is nothing wrong with the device. In this case, the issue is with the Kasa Smart app.
The Kasa smart app is susceptible to functional bugs, especially when the app is outdated. These bugs often cause the app to misbehave, making it display a different image than what is actually reflected on your camera’s screen.
To resolve this issue, you’ll need to delete and re-install the Kasa smart app on your phone.
- Go to your home screen.
- Find the Kasa app on your screen.
- Then, press and hold the app to reveal the Uninstall button.
- Finally, open your Google Play Store or App Store to re-install the Kasa Smart app to your phone.
Your Kasa Cam should be displaying images on its screen now.
Factory Reset Your Kasa Cam
If your Kasa Camera night vision hasn’t worked by now, the device probably has a fatal issue. You can resolve this issue by factory resetting your camera.
A factory reset fixes the issues in your camera by deleting the entire data in the system. This ensures that all, or at least, most of the problems in the system are eliminated.
How to factory reset your Kasa Camera:
- Search for the button labeled RESET on your Kasa camera.
- Press and hold this button for 15 seconds.
- An amber light will start flashing on the camera.
- Locate the sync button on the back of the camera and press it.
- Hold this button for 15 seconds.
- You’ll see an amber light blinking again.
- The camera will reset itself and go off.
- The reset is complete when the camera turns back on.
Your camera’s night vision should resume working after the factory reset.
Replace Your Camera
There are some cases where the night vision still doesn’t work after the factory reset. If this happens, it means that your camera is faulty. So, you’ll have to replace your Kasa camera.
Wrapping Up
The steps we’ve discussed above will help you troubleshoot your Kasa camera night vision when it stops working. If you follow them in order, you should fix the night vision before reaching the end of the article. But if all of the other solutions fail, you’ll have to replace your camera.
