Geeni Won’t Connect to 5GHz Wi-Fi [Quick Fix]
Are you wondering why your Geeni device won’t connect to your 5GHz Wi-Fi? If so, keep reading to see why this happens and how to resolve it.
The most likely reason your Geeni device won’t connect to 5GHz Wi-Fi is that the device is not compatible with the 5GHz Wi-Fi band but 2.4GHz. So, a quick way to resolve this issue is to switch your Wi-Fi band to 2.4GHz.
That said, I’ll explain more details on this issue, and how to get it solved. Read on!
Compatibility Issues
As mentioned earlier, one major reason you’re unable to get your Geeni device to connect to 5GHz Wi-Fi is that the Geeni device doesn’t support the 5GHz Wi-Fi band.
Most Geeni devices such as smart plugs, smart lights, and cameras don’t work with the 5GHz Wi-Fi band. So, if your device won’t connect, chances are it’s not compatible with 5GHz Wi-Fi.
You can troubleshoot this issue by switching the Wi-Fi band on your router to 2.4GHz. The procedure to do this depends on the brand of router you own. You want to check your router’s user manual for guidelines.
Your Device is Not in Pairing Mode
In my experience, most Geeni smart devices need to be in pairing mode to connect to Wi-Fi. If you’re having issues connecting it to your 5GHz Wi-Fi, the issue might not be the Wi-Fi, but the device is not in pairing mode.
For Geeni devices, such as smart plugs and bulbs, you’ll need to put them in pairing mode before you connect to Wi-Fi. If you’re trying to connect a Geeni/Merkury smart plug, you can simply press and hold the power button for about 10 seconds. Once the LED light blinks rapidly, the plug is in pairing mode.
Restart the setup process once your device enters pairing mode.
Double Check Your Wi-Fi Password
You’ll need to enter your Wi-Fi password to allow your Geeni device to connect. If you enter the wrong password, your device won’t connect to Wi-Fi.
Double-check your password to be sure you’re entering the correct one. If you don’t remember your password, reset your router and set a new password.
More so, check that you haven’t reached your router’s connection limit. If so, disconnect some devices connected to your router and try to connect the Geeni device again.
Your Geeni App is Outdated
Again, your Geeni device or Wi-Fi may not be the reason for the connectivity issue but your Geeni app.
If your Geeni device is compatible with the 5GHz Wi-Fi band but it won’t connect, check whether your app is up-to-date.
Using an outdated app sometimes causes some malfunctions. So, check your app store to see if the app requires an update and get it updated.
More so, check and update your Geeni device firmware. You can update your device’s firmware through the Geeni app.
Reset Your Geeni Device
If the device itself is malfunctioning, it may not connect to Wi-Fi. Another way to resolve this problem is to perform a factory reset on your Geeni device and start the setup process again.
Note that the reset method for different Geeni devices varies. Check your user manual or try googling your Geeni device reset instructions.
After resetting your device, reboot your router. Then set up the device and reconnect to your Wi-Fi.
Final Thoughts
If your Geeni device won’t connect to your 5GHz network, the device might not be compatible with the 5GHz network. Change your Wi-Fi band to 2.4GHz to resolve the issue.
If that doesn’t help, check that your device is in the mode. Also, update your Geeni app and the device firmware.
Your last resort is to perform a factory reset. This should fix the problem.
