How to Troubleshoot Wi-Fi Connection Issues with Your YI Home Camera
1. Check and Change Your Wi-Fi Network Band
YI Home Cameras (as of now) are not compatible with the 5GHz Wi-Fi network band. If your router is operating on this band, that could be the reason for the connection failure.
Check your router to confirm the frequency it’s operating on—you can do this by signing in to your router’s admin page via a web browser. If you’re not sure how to do that, refer to your router’s user manual or try googling the model for guidelines.
If your router is operating on the 5GHz band, switch it to 2.4GHz. This should fix the connection issues.
However, if you’re still unable to connect your YI Home Camera to your home Wi-Fi after switching the network band, continue to the next step.
2. Update Your YI Home App
Another likely cause of Wi-Fi connection problems with your YI Home Camera is an outdated app. That is, if you’re using an outdated version of the YI Home app, it might result in some malfunctions—such as connectivity issues.
So, you’ll need to check and update your YI Home app to fix the connection problem.
Follow the steps below to update your YI Home app:
- Go to the Google Play Store and enter ‘YI Home App’ in the search bar. If you are using an iPhone, you can find the YI Home App in the App Store.
- Next, click on the app in the search results. This should take you to the YI Home app page.
- Tap on the Update button at the top of the page to download the latest version of the YI Home App.
Once you’ve finished downloading the newest version, your YI Home Camera should connect to your Wi-Fi network easily. But if not, continue to the next step.
3. Check that You’ve Entered the Correct Wi-Fi Password
An incorrect Wi-Fi password could also be the reason you can’t get your YI Home Camera to connect to Wi-Fi.
When pairing your YI Home Camera to the YI Home app, the system will require you to enter the password to your Wi-Fi router. If you enter the wrong password, your camera won’t connect to your Wi-Fi.
If you are still having problems connecting your YI Home Camera to your Wi-Fi network, check that you’ve typed in the correct password. If you’ve forgotten your password, reset the router and set a new password.
4. Disconnect Your YI Home Camera from One of Your Phones
Do you have two smartphones? Chances are you might have downloaded the YI Home App on one of your phones and linked your camera to it. Perhaps you forgot you’ve already paired the YI Home camera with your phone.
Now, you downloaded the YI Home app on your other phone and are trying to set it up. Unfortunately, the YI Home Camera can only connect to one phone at a time. If you try to set up the camera with more than one phone, the second setup won’t work until you remove the app/account from the other phone.
If this is the case with you, remove the YI app/account from one phone before setting it up with another. That is, ensure you have the app installed and set up on one phone only.
Here’s how to remove your YI Home Camera from the YI Home App on your phone:
- Open the YI Home app on your phone and tap the Account tab in the Home Menu.
- Next, tap Manage.
- Tap on your current subscription plan to reveal the camera(s) you’ve added to your account.
- You’ll see a check mark beside each camera. Tap the check mark beside the camera you want to remove.
- Finally, tap Next to save the changes.
5. Move Your Phone Closer to Your YI Home Camera
Your YI Home Camera connects to Wi-Fi through the YI Home app on your phone. If your phone is too far away from the camera, it might not connect to Wi-Fi.
Go closer to your router when setting up your YI Home camera. This will boost the Wi-Fi signal strength for a faster connection.
6. Move Your Router Away from Other Electronic Devices
If your YI Home Camera can’t connect to your Wi-Fi network, other electronic devices might be interfering with your Wi-Fi connection. When two electronic devices compete for the same Wi-Fi network, the smaller device is most likely to lose the connection.
Most of the other devices that require a Wi-Fi network are larger than your phone. So, when they interfere with your Wi-Fi connection, they dominate the network, and your phone disconnects from the network. As a result, your YI Home camera may not connect to your Wi-Fi network.
To ensure other electronic devices don’t interfere with your Wi-Fi network, move your router away from these devices. You can also bring your router closer to your phone to enable the YI Home Camera to connect easily to your Wi-Fi network.
7. Restart Your YI Home Camera
Your YI Home Camera may still fail to connect to Wi-Fi even after you’ve tried all the tips above. If this happens, you can try restarting the camera. Your YI Home Camera might connect to your Wi-Fi network after you restart it.
Before you restart your YI Home Camera, you need to exit the YI Home app. Once you leave the app, you can restart the camera.
To restart your YI Home Camera, press the reset button with a paperclip until a yellow light appears. The yellow light shows the process is successful.
After restarting your YI Home Camera, open the YI Home App to reconnect the YI Home Camera to Wi-Fi.
Wrapping Up
So that’s how to troubleshoot Wi-Fi connection issues with your YI Home camera.
To recap, if you’re having trouble connecting your YI Home camera to Wi-Fi, restart your router. Next, check and switch the Wi-Fi network to 2.4GHz to fix the problem.
If that doesn’t help, update the YI Home app, check that your Wi-Fi password is correct and restart your YI Home camera.
