HuTools Look Manual [Programming Instructions]

In this post, I’m going to walk you through the steps to program a new/previously owned HuTools Digital Deadbolt (DKS01 and other models).

Hutools Deadbolt

If this sounds like what you’re looking for, let’s head right into it!

Door Orientation Detection

If you’ve just installed a new HuTools Digital Deadbolt, the first thing you need to do is to detect the orientation of the door. This is going to teach the lock the orientation of the door—whether it’s a right or left-handed door.

Note that your lock may not function properly if you skip this step.

That said, here’s how to perform the door orientation detection:

  1. Keep your door open and unlocked.
  2. Remove the battery cover and insert 3 AA fresh batteries (use non-rechargeable alkaline batteries).
  3. Look for a small circle button below the battery compartment labeled RES.
  4. Press and hold the button with a pin or paper clip. While still holding the button, insert the 4th battery.
  5. Continue holding the button until the latch bolt extends to learn the orientation of the door.
  6. Once the latch bolt extends and retracts, the process is complete.

Now, let’s head over to other programming.

Note: When programming the lock, a green light/flashes indicate success. But if you hear 6 rapid beeps, followed by red flashes, it indicates incorrect programming or time-out. Start all over again.

Changing the Default/Existing Master Code

Your HuTools Digital Deadbolt comes with an 8-digit default Master Code—12345678. As you probably know, the Master Code is the administrative code that allows you to make programming changes in the lock.

You need to change the default Master Code before it becomes functional.

Also, if you’ve acquired a previously owned HuTools lock, you’ll need to change the Master Code for security reasons.

That said, here’s how to change the default/existing Master Code on your HuTools Lock:

  1. Press the HuTools button twice. Then enter the existing Master Code. For a new HuTools lock, the existing Master Code is the default Code—12345678.
  2. Press the HuTools button and press 1.
  3. Enter a new Master Code (4-10 digits) and press the HuTools button.
  4. Re-enter the new Master Code and press the HuTools button.
  5. Now your new Master Code is set. You can now use it to program other functions in the lock.

Note: This lock doesn’t support the following code format:

  • Forward number sequence. For example, 123456789.
  • Backward number sequence. For example, 987654321.
  • Repeat number sequence. For example, 333333333.

Also, your new code must not contain an existing code in the lock. For example, if an existing code is 3251. A new code—24873251 won’t be accepted.

If you’re having issues adding a code, check that you’re not entering an unsupported code format.

Adding User Codes

A User Code is a 4-10 digit code that can be used to unlock the door from the outside.

You can add up to 20 User Codes and share them with your household members.

Here’s how to add a User Code:

  1. Press the HuTools button twice. Next, enter your current Master Code
  2. Press the HuTools button and press 2.
  3. Enter a new User Code and press the HuTools button.
  4. Re-enter the new User Code and press the HuTools button.
  5. You’ll see a green light/flash, indicating the programming is successful—the new User Code is active.

Deleting a User Code

If you want to remove a User Code from the lock, here are the steps to take:

  1. Press the HuTools button twice and enter your Master Code.
  2. Press the HuTools button and press 3.
  3. Enter the User Code you want to delete and press the HuTools button.
  4. The code is now deleted.

Unlocking/Locking Your Door

You can unlock your door from the outside using a User Code. Here’s how it works:

  • Enter the User Code via the keypad and press the HuTools button. If the User Code is valid, your door should be unlocked by now.
  • You can also use the Master Code to unlock your door from outside—enter Master Code and press the HuTools button.
  • There is also a key override. So, you can use the physical key to unlock from outside.

To lock your door from the outside:

  • Press and hold any button on the keypad for about 3 seconds.
  • You can also use the physical key to lock the door.
  • To lock/unlock from inside, rotate the thumb turn to the Lock or Unlock position.

Enabling/Disabling Auto-Lock

HuTools Digital Deadbolt has an auto-lock function that automatically locks the door after a few seconds—if the door is unlocked.

However, this feature is not active by default. So, you’ll need to enable it to get it to work.

Here is how to enable auto-lock:

  1. Press the HuTools button twice and enter your Master Code.
  2. Press the HuTools button and press 5.
  3. Press 1 and press the HuTools button.
  4. Auto-lock is now active.

To disable auto-lock:

  1. Press the HuTools button twice and enter your Master Code.
  2. Press the HuTools button and press 5.
  3. Press 2 and press the HuTools button.
  4. Auto-lock is disabled.

Vacation Mode

Vacation Mode, when active, will disable all User Codes. During this time, only the Master Code can be used to unlock the door.

This feature is useful when you’re leaving your home for vacation.

To enable Vacation Mode:

  1. Press the HuTools button twice.
  2. Enter your Master Code and press the HuTools button.
  3. Press 6 and press the HuTools button.
  4. Vacation Mode is enabled.

To disable Vacation Mode, enter your Master Code on the keypad.

Resetting Your HuTools Lock

If you acquired a previously used HuTools Lock, you want to reset the lock to remove all codes. Then reprogram the lock and add new codes.

Also, if you’ve lost your Master Code, you can reset the lock to restore the factory default settings, then reprogram the lock using the default Master Code.

Here’s how to factory reset your HuTools Lock:

  1. Keep your door open and unlocked to prevent accidental lockouts.
  2. Go to the interior assembly of the lock and remove the battery cover.
  3. Look for a small round button below the battery pack—labeled RES. That’s the Reset button.
  4. Now get a pin or paper clip. Press and hold the Reset button using the pin or paper clip.
  5. While still pressing the Reset button, remove one battery from the lock and put it back in.
  6. Keep pressing the Reset button until the latch extends.
  7. Your lock is reset.

Next, reprogram your lock, starting with changing the default Master Code.

Wrapping Up

As you can see, programming the HuTools Digital Deadbolt is a straightforward process.

Take note of the unsupported code format and do not waste time during programming to prevent the unit from timing out.

During programming, the HuTools button will turn green, showing you can proceed to the next step. Make sure you proceed to the next step before the green light turns off.

Finally, if you notice 10 red flashes when you press any key on the keypad, it shows the batteries are low and need to be replaced. Only use non-rechargeable alkaline batteries and do not mix old batteries with new ones.
