Leviton Decora Smart Switch Not Connecting [Quick Fix]
So your Leviton Decora Smart Switch keeps saying unable to connect when you try to connect the device to Wi-Fi?
This may be happening because you’re trying to connect to an incompatible Wi-Fi network. Entering the Wrong Wi-Fi password in the My Leviton app may also prevent the smart switch from connecting.
In this post, we’ll show you what you can do to fix this problem. Let’s get right into it.
Tips to Fix Leviton Decora Smart Switch Wi-Fi Connection Issues
Check that You’re Using the Correct Leviton App
To set up your Leviton Decora Smart Switch and connect to Wi-Fi, you’ll need to use the My Leviton app. You want to check properly to ensure you have the right app installed on your device—if not, the connection will fail.
Note that there are other apps, such as Decora Smart Home and Decora Digital Dimmer and Timer, but you can’t use any of these to set up your Leviton Decora Smart Switch. So, check and ensure you are using the app named My Leviton—you can get it on Play Store or App Store.
If this checks out, and your switch is still not connecting, continue to the next step.
Reboot Your Router
If you have the right app installed on your phone, but you’re still having issues setting up the switch, try rebooting your router.
Rebooting your router will help refresh your Wi-Fi network and fix some connection errors.
You can reboot your router by unplugging it from the power source and plugging it back in.
Move Your Router Closer to the Switch
If your Leviton Decora Smart Switch is still not connecting to Wi-Fi, your Wi-Fi signal strength might be poor.
Move your router closer to your smart switch to fix this issue. Your smart switch will easily connect to Wi-Fi if the router is only about 30 feet away from the device.
After reducing the distance between your smart switch and router, connect your smart switch to Wi-Fi again. If the device fails to connect, move on to the next step.
Check Your Wi-Fi Band
The Leviton Decora Smart Switch only supports the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network band. If your router is operating on the 5GHz band, you may experience some connectivity issues.
Check your router to see if it’s operating on the 2.4GHz band. If not, switch it to 2.4GHz—refer to your router’s user manual for guidelines.
More so, ensure your router is not on dual-band. When on a dual-band, the router automatically switches bands itself. And this may cause some connectivity issues—if it switches to an unsupported Wi-Fi band.
Did your smart switch connect to Wi-Fi after you changed your Wi-Fi band? If not, continue to the next step.
Enter the Correct Wi-Fi Password in the App
As you can see during the setup, you need to enter your Wi-Fi password to authorize the connection. Of course, the connection will fail if you enter an incorrect password.
Your smart switch will display an amber LED light if you input the wrong Wi-Fi password.
Double check and ensure you enter the correct password. If you don’t remember the password, reset your router and set a new password.
While entering your Wi-Fi password, note that your password is case-sensitive.
If your Leviton Decora Switch doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi after inputting the correct password, continue to the next step.
Ensure Your Phone is Connected to the Same Network
You may experience connectivity issues if your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network other than the one you are trying to connect the smart switch to.
That is, you need to ensure your phone (where the My Leviton App is installed) is connected to the same Wi-Fi network you want to connect the smart switch to. So, check and ensure you connect your phone and switch to the same Wi-Fi network.
Factory Reset Your Leviton Decora Smart Switch
If your smart switch doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi after you’ve tried all the tips above, the device might have encountered a functional error. As such, you’ll need to factory reset the device.
Here’s how to factory reset your Leviton Decora Smart Switch:
- Press and hold the top paddle on your smart switch for 15 seconds. The LED light on the smart switch will start blinking red and amber.
- Now, release the top paddle. The LED light will change to a green color, showing the reset is complete.
After factory resetting your smart switch, re-enroll the device to your My Leviton app. Your smart switch should now connect to Wi-Fi.
But if your Leviton Smart Switch still doesn’t connect to Wi-Fi after this, continue to the next step.
Contact Leviton Support Team
If factory resetting your smart switch does not connect the device to Wi-Fi, report the issue to the Leviton technical support team. The support team will ask for your smart switch model, brand, and model number. Once you give them this information, they may recommend a fix to try.
